Difference Between Mechanical and Automatic

On a technical level, an automatic movement is at type of mechanical movement. It runs without a battery and needs to be wound up every couple of days or so. The key difference lies in the rotor found at the back of the watch. This fascinating mechanism winds the watch with every swing of your wrist, keeping the power reserve charged for longer periods of time before you need to manually wind them up again. There’s another difference that you might not be aware of. In most pure mechanical watches, you will feel resistance on the crown once you achieve a full wind, but not so with an automatic watch. With an automatic movement, the winding mechanism disengages from the mainspring once you reach a full wind, and this ensures that you will never overwind and damage the watch! It’s one of those small details that’s worth acknowledging.
